As a visual communications agency we are always on the look-out for fresh creative talent. As such I was delighted when approached by Birchwood High School, Bishop’s Stortford to ask if we would take part in their student shadowing programme.
I welcomed 14yr old Sophie Hunt to media:cpm early one Monday morning. Now Sophie is not your average student at Birchwood High, she is also my niece so it was even more exciting to share this experience, her first in a real-work environment.
I will let Sophie share her experience in her own words…
Hello, I’m Sophie, a 14 year old student from Hertfordshire. On the 6th of July 2015 I ventured out into the real world as part of a school work shadowing scheme. Upon thinking what would be the right work place for someone like me I thought, ‘what better place to go than Media:cpm’, a company specialising in Design and Print Management. I am currently studying Graphic Design and I.T.
My expectations for the day were none other than to follow Gary, my Uncle, to see what he gets up to! How wrong I was! I was up early and headed to a Starbucks in Braintree to meet Gary and discuss our agenda for the day. After this we headed to the office and I met with Matt one of the Designers. I sat beside a Mac and I was taught the different steps, techniques and Software used in the designing processes. I watched my poster develop from nothing into an attractive and personal design.
After this we had a Production meeting. We sat down at a table and discussed new clients, projects and any new requests that they have received. When this was over we received a proof from Matt. This was a finished version of the poster which I had earlier watched develop. I then had to sign this proof to confirm that I was 100% satisfied with the product that had been created. I signed it and it was sent off to be printed.
I then sat with Zoe who works in account management. Zoe taught me how to put a client into the computer system. I was able to put in all of my own details and treat myself like a true client. We had a look at some existing products and saw the different types of books that can be made. For example I learned the different sorts of paper that the product can be printed onto, and the different ways that books can be folded.
After this I went to sit beside Leanne the Accounts Manager. She showed me how they calculated the cost of the jobs that they have done and how she has to chase up anyone who isn’t paying for their work!
When we were all finished up at the office we headed down to the printing company who were to be printing the poster. We wandered around the factory and I was shown all of the different printing machines. I learned about the different printing techniques and saw how quickly they work. When I had finished walking around the factory I returned to the room where my poster was being printed to see 11 copies of it sitting beside the printer. It was amazing and I loved it. I have got a framed copy ready to put on my bedroom wall and I can’t wait to see it up there to remind me of the day.
Overall my day with MediaCPM was a great one. I really enjoyed myself and have been further inspired to enter the world of art and design when I leave school. I took away from this experience a broadened knowledge and a personalised poster which I can enjoy forever.
Thank you MediaCPM for having me and thank you for further encouraging me to do art and design.
